Insights in the non-alcoholic beverage industry

In a world where social norms have long been connected with alcohol consumption, there’s a growing movement that celebrates the benefits of a sober lifestyle. Did you know that Bella Hadid, Eva Mendes, Bradley Cooper, and Tom Holland are among the many people who have stopped drinking alcohol?

The decision to abstain from alcohol can bring many advantages to one’s life. From improved physical well-being to emotional balance, and enhanced productivity, the rewards of a sober lifestyle are truly transformative.

If you booze, you lose

Recent studies have underscored the impact and risks of alcohol on various aspects of health varying from:

1. Increased risk of seven types of cancer of which throat, breast and colon cancer;

2. Negative effect on sleep quality and mental health;

3. Heart and liver diseases;

4. Skin problems like rosacea and psoriasis;

5. Dehydration [1-12].

According to research even drinking just one glass of alcohol per day increases these risks.

Times are changing

As consumers worldwide become more aware of the negative effects of alcohol on various aspects of health, a shift towards healthier choices is evident. The rise of the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol market reflects not just a trend, but a lasting movement towards holistic well-being.

In a dynamic landscape of changing preferences, the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol market emerges as a beacon of positive transformation. In Western-Europe and Scandinavia, 1 in 5 adults already refrain from consuming alcohol, while in the US, the share of non-alcoholic wine in the total non-alcoholic beverage category surged by +23.2% in 2022 compared to 2021, outpacing the growth rate of non-alcoholic beer (+19.5%) within the same category [14].

These remarkable trends reflect a global shift towards healthier choices, as evidenced by the burgeoning non-alcoholic and low-alcohol market, which is currently valued at $22.5 million as of 2021. Projections suggest that this market will continue its ascent, aiming to reach a staggering $68.9 billion by the year 2030 [14].

In the United States alone, between August 2021 and August 2022, the total dollar sales of non-alcoholic beverages reached an impressive $395 million, showcasing a substantial year-on-year growth rate of 20.6% [15]. This surge in popularity mirrors the continued rise of the Alcohol-free Dry January movement, which has firmly established itself and shows no signs of fading. In 2022, one in five American adults proudly participated in Dry January, marking a notable 13% increase from the previous year [6].

With these statistics in mind, it’s evident that the non-alcoholic wine market is poised for significant expansion. Predictions indicate that it will surge from a $2 billion valuation in 2023 to an impressive $5.2 billion by 2033, achieving an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% [13].

In conclusion, the evolving landscape of consumer preferences, coupled with a heightened awareness of health and well-being, has catapulted the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol market into the spotlight. With a promising future ahead, it’s clear that this industry is not only keeping pace with change but leading the way toward a more balanced and mindful approach to beverage choices.
