Blog #37: Wait, Not All Wine is Vegan?
WORLD vegan day
World Vegan Day, celebrated on November 1st, is a global celebration of the many benefits of a vegan lifestyle. It shines a spotlight on the positive impact of choosing plant-based options, not only for our health but also for animal welfare and the environment. This day serves as a reminder of the power of conscious choices and the growing movement towards a more compassionate, sustainable world.
Did you know that wine isn’t always VEGAN?
While wine may seem plant-based, not all wine is vegan due to the use of animal-derived products in the fining process, such as gelatin and isinglass. Vegan wines use alternatives like bentonite (a type of clay) or skip the fining process altogether. With growing demand, more wines are becoming vegan. Choosing vegan wine is both an ethical and sustainable option. World Vegan Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate with a glass of vegan wine!
Is VINADA Really Vegan? Absolutely!
The demand for a more natural approach is growing, and many winemakers are now turning to clay-based fining agents like bentonite and charcoal. Vegan wine is entirely free from animal-derived ingredients or production methods involving animal products, often identifiable by a vegan logo.
At VINADA, we use bentonite and vegetable proteins for the fining process. Bentonite, a type of swelling clay, was first discovered in Fort Benton, Montana, and is volcanic in origin, primarily composed of the mineral montmorillonite from the aluminum silicates group. Our vegetable proteins, sourced from beans or peas, are used to clarify the wine, replacing gelatin, which was traditionally used but is not allowed in vegan wines due to its animal origin.
So, yes, all of our wines are 100% vegan!
